finished album "new u" 1/22

Writer's picture: georgiegeorgie

I gave myself a six month time limit to finish some songs. I got my instruments and merch supplies back in July so I wanted to make something more intricate and complicated. Creating this piece was a huge learning experience on so many levels that I'm actually not sure what to say about the piece as a whole. I think I'll have a better idea of what to say after feedback from others but I'm proud of the piece in its entirety.

I haven't sung or played horns this seriously in a while and it feels like a kind of cleansing experience for me. Revisiting and rewriting old songs has been a very emotional experience for me, not just because if my own attachment to them and what they mean to me but because of how the songs resonated with others over the last ten years. I wanted to make sure that I played some songs that I never redo and recreate some songs that were my personal favorites that I felt didn't get the attention from me that they deserved.

Some of these old songs I originally threw together for the rush of getting something finished so that I could show others. Rewriting the songs now I am kinda revisiting myself more than the songs. I've changed a lot as a person, musician/composer and producer.. so to recreate these old songs took a lot of thoughtful work and dedication. I also cut samples from these redos to create completely new instrumentals with the intent to break up this record of mostly revisited songs.

Really, I wanted to use this as an opportunity to practice performing with my instruments and build more functional recording and editing/processing techniques in order to create an updated sound. I studied music from newer popular artists and compared it to a lot of my all-time favorites of the last 50 years trying to create a new sonic aesthetic for my project that can appeal to new listeners as well as people who've been listening for a long time.

The last time I got to really work seriously with my wind instruments and spend time practicing different mic placements or production techniques was in 2022. I really wanted to create something that incorporated horns but wasn't identifiable stylistically as far as leaning toward my ska, classic rock, reggae or hip hop influences. My goal was to create a totally different aesthetic mashup of my old music that maintained the energy of my older music while also making something that a new listener could readily and easily enjoy. I've always been the kind of songwriter and producer whose goal was to fill a kind of stylistic void in the music world by creating something I want to hear. It took a lot of time studying my influences as well as critiquing my own work to create the sound for this.

I refuse to follow the "pay for play" marketing model that many musicians follow today. If you enjoyed the record I'd seriously appreciate it if you'd share it with friends or with anyone you think might be interested. I don't feel threatened by AI gen music or by teams of hired musicians being contracted to create playlist fodder. I want to show people that real music is stronger than corporate music. I want to show people who want to play music that genuinely artistic and explorative musicality will never be rendered unimportant. I want to show people that a computer can't replace a human being in the workforce and especially not in the creative and artistic world. I want to show the world that the technology is a tool, not the human being.

If you read this I want to give you a special thanks. I want to thank people who supported me so that I could finish this record. I want to thank people who listened to my music and had me in their thoughts the last few years. I want to thank people who've reached out and kept me going with their positivity.

Please, share this record if you can because my goal is to prove that word of mouth and artistic common interest is stronger than algorithmically controlled promotion relying on a cheesy, pay-to-play structure. I worked really hard on this set of songs, so please donate and buy shirts or tapes if you can.

For people interested in my process as a performer and producer I'll post more on this page soon.

this is what art should be. listening to your new album is a cathartic experience for me: something old but refreshed, renewed; a restoration of warmly-loved tools, fondly polished by its crafter.

art is not "content", it is art. it's meant to be an outpouring of the soul, that some may understand and some may not. you understand this. it's meant to connect us as beings living together on this earth. it makes me sad to see people call their art "content": don't they know their soul is worth more than that? that their craft is to be treasured, not devalued?

in your art i see something wholly unique, something truly yours. it makes me want to start creating again.…
